In 1892 and 1893 the first commemorative coins were made. They were half dollars from 1892 and 1893 it shows a port view of Santa Maria above two hemispheres flanked by the date 1492. The coin was made to celebrate the Quadricentennial year of the Columbian Exposition. The words World’s Columbian Exposition Chicago surrounds the design. And some of them could be worth over 10,000 dollars! The first specimen struck was bought for 10,000 dollars by the firm Remington Typewriter as a public stunt. The half dollar also contains 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. They minted the coin in Philadelphia where 950,000 were distributed. They minted about 100 of the 1892 proof coins. The people who designed it were Charles E. Barber (ðŸ˜) for the obverse and George T. Morgan for thereverse. Charles E. Barber was actually the mints director selected in 1880 by President Rutherford B. Hayes. In 1893 4,052,105 half dollars were made. And the mint either put it in circulation or melted the coin for the ones that did not sell. In total they destroyed or melted 2,501,700 half dollars. But there are still a lot of the coins that are kept. The coins were originally sold for 1 dollar at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
